Chapter Two: When stars forgot to fall

*Chapter Two: The Note Without a Name

Adaeze sat on her bed, her fingers curled tightly around the mysterious note. Her eyes scanned the words again and again, trying to find something—anything—that gave away the identity of the writer. The handwriting was neat, slanted, and slightly artistic. Male or female? She couldn’t tell.

She turned to Ifunanya, still sleeping with earphones plugged in. *She couldn’t have written this… right?*

Morning came slowly. The air was thick and her heart was heavier. She didn’t tell anyone about the note. Instead, she slipped it into her notebook and carried it with her like a secret weight.

Later that day, she met Leo at the school library. He was already there, sitting near the window where the light spilled across the pages of his notebook. He looked up and gave a half-smile.

“You’re early,” she said, a bit surprised.

“I like quiet,” he replied.

They worked in silence for a while, exchanging only necessary words about the project. But Adaeze couldn’t concentrate. The note kept playing in her mind.

She finally broke the silence. “Leo... do you write poetry?”

He looked up slowly. “Why?”

“You just seem like the type,” she said, watching him closely.

Leo gave a soft chuckle. “I read poems. Writing them is... personal.”

So it wasn’t him? Or was it exactly him?*

He looked at her then, in a way that made her shift uncomfortably. “Do you?”

“Do I what?”

“Write. You seem... like someone who doesn’t say much, but feels a lot.”

That stunned her. For a second, she thought maybe he knew. *Was he the one who left the note?*

“I used to,” she said, “But people don’t listen when girls write about pain. They want romance.”

“Sometimes pain is romance,” Leo murmured.

That moment lingered between them—too fragile to hold, too loud to ignore.

After the meeting, Adaeze walked back alone. Her phone buzzed.

*Unknown Number*: *Did you find my words?*

She froze.

Her hands trembled as she replied: *Who are you?*

*Unknown Number*: *Someone who sees the quiet parts of you.*

Adaeze’s heart raced. The note wasn’t random. It was a thread. A beginning.

Now she had two mysteries:

The boy she was paired with.

And the one watching from the shadows.
